The South African Whale Coast

ļ»æThe Overberg and the Whale Coast really are a hidden treasure: craggy mountains wind a jagged path toward often stormy oceans inhabited by schools of migrant whales, green hills grazed by wild antelope give gently onto tranquil lagoons and beaches, while tilled orchards and neat vineyards stretch out in wild contrast to the disorder of pristine forests.

There is a corner of this beautiful region to satisfy every soul ā€¦ that of the artist, the photographer, the birdwatcher, the wine lover, the gourmet, the outdoor enthusiast, and the avid sportsman alike. A number of towns and small villages complement the areaā€™s natural beauty. Life there is markedly unhurried, moving for the most part at a pastoral pace. Many also still have a close connection with the countryā€™s pioneer past. Unsurprisingly, the beautiful surroundings and the pleasures of country living have attracted many newcomers, who have contributed greatly to a fascinating cultural pot pourri.

These pages reflect the essential character of the place: the natural surroundings, the modern and traditional structures, the many creative and industrious individuals who live here and, importantly, an insight into the activities with which they fill their days. Jeremy Browne - Author, Artist, Photographer

Jeremy Browne lives in Hermanus with his wife Sandy and their 3 children Emma, Thomas and Lucy. Jeremyā€™s passion for photography began in the 1980ā€™s while working abroad in the Mediterranean. After studying at the Durban Technikon, Jeremy enjoyed a long career in advertising before re-locating to Franschhoek in the Western Cape.

It would be here that he developed his keen interest in the Winelands region and published his first Franschhoek Book in 2004. Since then Jeremy formed 2b Publications and published a 2nd edition on Franschhoek in 2008, Stellenbosch in 2009 , Paarl / Wellington in 2010 and The Cape Whale Coast in 2011.
